“My fast is a prayer of hope, encouragement and solidarity....
Giving up food is my offering, an embodiment of the struggle to save
our fragile world. I invite members of all spiritual traditions and the general public to offer their own prayers for the planet, especially during the meetings in Durban."

Bill's fast began on Sunday, November 27th, which in the Christian calendar is Hope Sunday, the first day

During that week, Bill will stand in front of various leaders’ offices as a public prayer for courage in Durban. Dear Fellow Citizens: Re: Fast for Courage 2011
I believe that bold decisions at the Climate Change Conference in Durban are even more urgent than they were two years ago. Since the meetings in Copenhagen, climate change has accelerated. As I did during the meetings in Copenhagen, I intend to go without food during the Durban deliberations. I feel that humanity’s future is in grave peril; I believe that a sustainable tomorrow is a spiritual question.
As the Canadian Interfaith Statement on Climate Change says: “...demonstrate national responsibility by committing to national carbon emission targets and a national renewable energy policy.”
I hope that you will receive this action as an offering of support, encouragement and solidarity. This is my prayer.
As I invite you now, I will be inviting members of churches, other faiths and the general public to offer their own prayers and actions for the planet during the days of the meetings in Durban.
The fast begins during the Christian commemoration of Advent, beginning on Hope Sabbath. I will be outside one of your Calgary offices and at Hillhurst United Church during the following ten days. A schedule is enclosed.
While I am fasting, Mardi Tindal, Moderator of The United Church of Canada, will be participating in the Durban conference. Be assured that my fasting is a prayer for courage, clarity and wisdom. Each and all of us is responsible for the legacy we leave for future generations.
Yours in Hope and Peace,
